About it

Big, round, pillowy vintage bass for blues, R&B, soul and old-school records. Ivan from Darkglass built it with four scenes, each a different way to get the same vintage sound, so you can pick the one you like and delete the rest:

Scene 1 – Peggy FlipTop amp: FlipTop amp (volume up to 6 for a little warm tube breakup when you dig in) into the FlipTop 1Γ—15 cab with the stock condenser mic, then a high-pass at 63 Hz and low-pass around 10 kHz to tighten it up. An optional Bus Compressor adds just 1–3 dB of gentle compression.

Scene 2 – TONE3000 B-15 FlipTop: the same amp as a single NAM capture. It’s one of the TONE3000 demo tones that come preloaded on the Anagram (single-mic and dual-mic versions), so there’s nothing extra to download.

Scene 3 – Gentle preamp: straight to the desk, like a lot of classic records. Bass at 2, a touch of treble, level pulled back slightly.

Scene 4 – Studio Pre (Fine Classics, paid): a famous console channel strip with the gain pushed for saturation, a little more bass and a little less treble. Use the mix knob to blend it in, and lower the trim if it gets too loud.

Tips from the video: most of this sound comes from your hands. Pluck near the neck and play lightly, roll your tone knob about halfway, and mute lightly with your fretting hand. A P-style bass or a J bass on the neck pickup, with flats or old roundwounds, gets you closest.
