Dinah
About
Dinah is a mono compressor with two controls, Sensitivity and Output. It uses an
OTA-style gain cell in a feedback loop. Attack, release and knee are fixed
internally and are not exposed as parameters.
Sensitivity sets how hard the compressor works. One control moves several things
at once. It changes the threshold, the gain at low levels, and the timing. At low
settings the compressor lets go slowly, at high settings several times faster.
Output sets the level after the compressor. It sits outside the detector loop, so
it does not change the amount of compression.
At high Sensitivity settings the block works as a limiter. The ratio is very high
and the output level barely moves. At low settings it just takes the tops off the
peaks.
Features
- Feedback design. The detector listens after the gain cell, not before it.
- This is not a clean compressor. The OTA-style gain cell adds a little colour as
it works.
- Levels are referenced to the Anagram's input, so the knee sits at a normal
playing level with no setup.
CPU
Measured on the device as the difference the block adds to the host load.
Mono, one instance, about 1.8 points against a chain with no blocks. In a
stereo chain the host loads the block twice. No xruns in either case.
Uses
- Levelling a bass DI before an amp or cabinet block
- Sustain for lead lines
- Compression with fixed attack and release
